Professional Development

One of the things that we focus on during the winter months is professional development. The management of our department attend national, provincial and local seminars, meetings and conferences on golf course management. These events help us stay current and up to date on technology, theories, legislation and practices. Yesterday we attended a local seminar offered by the Greater London Area Golf Superintendents Association at Westhaven G & CC. Among the speakers was Teri Yamada, who is an environmental consultant for the golf business. She spoke on the new regulation concerning the province wide ban on cosmetic pesticide use. The golf course is exempt from this regulation with some conditions. The definition of golf course is greens, tees, fairways and rough. Tree work @ Highland

Winter time is a great time to prune and "clean up" some of our mature trees. Our contractor is currently on the property removing any dead, diseased or broken limbs from some of our trees. During the fall we experienced a couple of snow/wind storms that resulted in some major tree damage. Our staff worked incredibly hard to clean up the debris before winter arrived. Well, as we all know winter arrived early and so did the snow. The amount of snow that we recieved in London this year made it very difficult to get around the golf course to do work. With the conditions that we now have, no snow and frozen ground, we are able to bring in the "bucket truck" to reach the more difficult limbs. During this process the aborist and I are evaluating some of the trees on the property for further care (with reference to our tree report). This will help prevent any damage or dangerous situations with relations to trees.

Welcome!!!

Welcome to Highland CC Grounds Dept.'s new blog. Our intention is to inform, educate and update our members on the practices, procedures and tasks that our department is involved in. Our department intends to use this method of communication to increase the awareness of what is "going on " on the golf course throughout the year. We hope that you will check in regularly and view any posts and pictures of what is currently happening on the golf course.
