Since the golf course closed (8 days ago) we have had more rain than we did in all of October. We were able to complete all of the fertilizing and spraying that was scheduled before the wet weather set in. The weather has made getting around the golf course rather difficult. We have removed a number of smaller coniferous trees that were encroaching on larger, healthier trees throughout the golf course. This will allow the larger native trees to flourish and grow to their natural shape and stature. As the rainy weather has kept us inside for a few days, we have made progress in the sanding and painting of course hardware (stakes, martin houses, yardage markers, etc). Our equipment manager Al, has been servicing the club's fleet of golf cars for next season as well. Today we are going to continue the bunker work on #17. Our intention is to have the liner, sand bags, topsoil and sod installed by the week's end. We will be breaking from the bunkers on Wednesday to put down the covers on our greens. The temperatures are forecasted to drop and become favourable for putting the greens to bed for the winter. Hopefully we can still get a few nice days to complete some other projects on our list....
A week has passed since our annual spring greens aeration. We have had a mixed bag of weather, hot, dry, cold, wet and even frost! These conditions make it challenging to aid in healing, but with the more recent consistent warm temperatures we are seeing solid recovery. We were fortunate to have decent weather to complete the process on time, allowing us to fill all the holes created by the 1/2” hollow tines. As there are some minor depressions within some of the holes we will be beginning our bi-weekly topdressing program early next week. Our team is mowing and rolling our greens daily, while slowly lowering our height of cut to our summer norm. We all know that spring cultural practices are not popular among golfers, but these all important tasks are the building blocks for high performance greens conditions throughout the heart of the golf season.
